What our metadata cleaner removes

Every metadata standard used by cameras, phones, and AI generators: EXIF, GPS, XMP, IPTC, C2PA, and more.

How to remove metadata from images

Four steps, all running locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, ever.

01
File stays on your device
Your image is read directly into browser memory. Nothing is sent over the internet at any step.
02
All metadata removed
The image is redrawn from raw pixels and saved as a fresh file. All embedded metadata is discarded in the process.
03
Fingerprint randomized
A handful of pixels are shifted by 1–2 color values, invisible to the eye but enough to change the file's unique fingerprint and break reverse-image search.
04
Clean download
Your clean image is ready to save. After you download it, all image data is deleted from your browser automatically.

Who uses this tool

From AI creators cleaning images before posting to privacy-conscious users stripping location data from photos they share online.

  1. 01

    Digital Artists & AI Creators

Remove AI signatures from DALL-E, MidJourney, and Stable Diffusion images before sharing on social platforms. Prevents "Made with AI" labels from appearing automatically.

  2. 02

    Social Media Managers

Prepare AI-generated content for Pinterest, Instagram, and Facebook without triggering AI detection. Remove C2PA credentials that cause automatic labelling.

  3. 03

    Print-on-Demand Sellers

Clean metadata from AI artwork before uploading to Etsy, Amazon Merch, or Redbubble. Removes Stable Diffusion prompts and model hashes embedded in PNG files.

  4. 04

    Bloggers & Content Marketers

Use AI-generated images in articles without embedded metadata revealing their origins. Strip image hash fingerprints to bypass reverse-image duplicate detection.

  5. 05

    Businesses & Agencies

Ensure AI-generated deliverables are clean of generator signatures, editing history, and workflow metadata before client distribution or publication.

  6. 06

    Privacy-Conscious Users

Remove GPS coordinates and camera serial numbers from photos before sharing online. EXIF geotags in vacation photos can expose your home address to anyone who downloads them.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about how CleanMetaDATA works and what it can do.

No. Everything happens inside your browser tab. We have no server that receives your images; the code is open source and you can verify this yourself on GitHub.
CleanMetaDATA removes the C2PA Content Credentials and AI software tags that trigger the label. However, platforms update their detection without notice and some (like Instagram) can also detect AI content visually. There's no guarantee, but removing metadata is the correct first step.
No. SynthID and similar invisible watermarks are embedded directly into pixel values; they are not metadata. No metadata cleaner can remove them, including ours. We're transparent about this limitation.
JPEG images are saved at 92% quality, which is visually identical to the original in nearly all cases. PNG files are exported without any quality loss. The pixel changes used for fingerprint alteration are a maximum of 2 color values per pixel; completely imperceptible.
Most tools only strip EXIF data. CleanMetaDATA also removes C2PA content credentials, Stable Diffusion generation settings embedded in PNG files (from Automatic1111, ComfyUI, and Forge), and alters the image's digital fingerprint. All without a server, account, or paywall.
Completely free, no limits, no account required. The project is MIT-licensed and hosted on GitHub Pages. There is no catch: we built this because we needed it and wanted to share it.
JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP, and HEIC (iPhone photos). HEIC files are converted in your browser before processing. AVIF support is planned.

What this tool can't do

What CleanMetaDATA does

  • Removes embedded metadata: EXIF camera data, GPS location, timestamps, XMP and IPTC tags
  • Strips AI generation markers including C2PA Content Credentials and AI software tags
  • Alters the image's perceptual fingerprint to disrupt reverse-image search and duplicate matching
  • Runs entirely in your browser. Images are never uploaded to or stored on any server.

What it can't do

  • Cannot remove invisible watermarks such as Google's SynthID. Those are baked into pixels, not metadata.
  • Cannot change how a platform's visual AI detection analyzes the image itself
  • Cannot guarantee a specific result on Pinterest, Instagram, or any platform. Detection algorithms update without notice.
  • Cannot undo a label a platform has already applied to a previously uploaded image
